The Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department in Dubai has announced the release of a new scholarly work titled “The Book and Woman… and Woman and the Book,” authored by Dr. Abdul Hakim Al-Anees. The book represents a valuable addition to the contemporary Islamic library, offering an extensive and well-documented study of women’s relationship with books—through authorship, transcription, reading, and research—across Islamic history.

Addressing both women and men, the book provides intellectual enrichment and academic value. It highlights the esteemed status of women in Islamic heritage and uncovers the significant scholarly efforts dedicated to studying their contributions and literary output. It also guides readers and researchers—male and female—to key sources, references, and repositories that enrich their studies and meet their academic aspirations. The author affirms that everything related to women in the context of knowledge and contribution is “desired, welcomed, and cherished,” reflecting her role as the sister of man and his partner in building civilization.

The book is divided into two main sections. The first offers an overview of what has been written about women and for women, shedding light on the publications of the Dubai Department of Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities in this field, as well as discussions on women in the Holy Qur’an and biographical dictionaries of notable women.

The second section traces the presence of women in the world of books throughout history—from their contributions to authorship up to the 12th century AH, to their roles in manuscript copying, library building, and manuscript verification. It also explores women’s autobiographical writings, highlights notable Emirati female authors, and features prominent non-Arab Muslim women writers. Additionally, it includes delightful chapters documenting real-life examples of women’s engagement with knowledge and books.

This publication reflects the Department’s commitment to supporting scientific research and enriching contemporary Islamic content, in line with its strategic plan to promote religious knowledge, highlight women’s civilizational role, and inspire younger generations to explore heritage and study women’s contributions to Islamic, linguistic, and literary sciences. The book further embodies the vision of the UAE’s wise leadership in empowering women academically and culturally, and in affirming their active role in development and their position as essential partners in shaping knowledge.
