Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department has completed its preparations to conduct the sighting of the crescent moon marking the beginning of the Holy Month of Ramadan. The observation will take place at its officially approved crescent-sighting platform in the Jebel Nazwa area of the Emirate of Dubai. This comes as part of the mandate of the committee entrusted with monthly moon sightings, within the Department’s institutional role of strengthening a Sharia-based methodology grounded in scientific accuracy.
This step aligns with the Department’s strategic objectives of promoting community awareness regarding the timings of acts of worship, including prayer and fasting, and reviving the religious heritage associated with crescent observation as practiced by our early forefathers in accordance with both Sharia and scientific standards. It also contributes to knowledge transfer and the promotion of astronomical culture in a simplified manner for children and youth.
In this context, Dr. Hamad Mohammed Saleh, Head of the Timings and Crescents Section, affirmed that Jebel Nazwa’s crescent-sighting route represents a scientific and community-oriented platform, given its monthly observation activities using all available scientific means. He noted that it uniquely combines astronomical precision, Sharia authenticity, and community heritage. He further explained that the Department’s adoption of systematic plans for crescent sighting enhances proper understanding of the commencement of religious seasons. The results of these observations also serve as a reference for the relevant authorities responsible for officially announcing the beginning of Hijri months in the UAE.
He added that these efforts reflect the Department’s commitment to implementing best practices in the field of crescent observation and presenting an integrated institutional model that strengthens community trust, while translating the vision of the wise leadership in reinforcing Dubai’s position as a leading center for community-based religious work founded on knowledge and scientific principles.
